Emulating a Professional Photographer

Part 1:
I believe this is the most successful image I took during this assignment because it captures the seemingly randomness of the subject with the dull, dark lighting as used by Nigel Shafran in his work. In this image of the box and old fridge, I was able to take two common items and turn them into captivating subjects of an image, similar to how Shafran used a dented package to capture in his message. I think these images both bring a sense of beauty to objects otherwise viewed as garbage.
The most challenging aspect of this assignment was finding a professional photographer to replicate their style. I commonly find myself drawn to the same style of photographs and wanted to try to step out of my comfort zone for this assignment. To do so, I tried to pick a photographer who's style was captivating yet not necessarily similar to what my previous style of photography is. In doing so, I created a challenge to view the world differently than I normally do and to capture images of subjects I would typically walk right past.
In the future, I will continue to put myself in uncomfortable situations to grow my versatility of photographic styles. I will view subjects and tell stories with objects I wouldn't deem as beautiful at first sight to create captivating images.

Comment- Hi Emily! I think this image is also very successful in recreating the style of Arbus. I believe this image utilizes the same composition, as it uses a bullseye technique of the subject being up close and centered in the image. I do believe that you could try to play around with the lighting to really capture the mixed lighting the photographer used in his portrait to enhance the emotions and muscular definition of the subject to tell more of a story within the image.

Hi Riley! I really loved all of your photos. I think you did a great job overall. I especially liked the photo you selected for your blog post. I also did my assignment on Nigel Shafran. You definitely used your own touch on his work which I appreciated a lot. When going through the list of photos to replicate, I saw this one as well. I tried to do something as similar as possible, but I could not get the exact image. I think you did a great job capturing it. Lighting is something I struggled with a lot during this assignment, and I think you have a great eye for it. You did a great job capturing the darkness…
Hi Riley! I think you made a great choice with the photo you selected for this assignment. It captures the essence of Nigel Shafran’s style without directly replicating his subject matter. The lighting and overall aesthetic closely align with the original, and the shadow behind your subject adds a striking sense of depth and draws the viewer into the darker elements of the composition. Great work!
Hi Riley! I think you picked a great photo to represent your work on this assignment. The photo chosen manages to feel like a picture also taken by Nigel Shafran without being an exact copy of his subject, The style and lighting matches the emulated photo well and the shadow captured behind your subject brings attention to the darkness.
Hi Riley! I think your photo does a great job at recreating Nigel Shafran’s work. I was drawn to how the two simple, random objects portray a captivating image. I think both the dark lighting and low exposure, as well as side lighting fits well with this photo and the objects. I like that you mentioned viewing objects in a different way than at first sight, I think we typically overlook many things that could be seen as art if we just looked with a different perspective.
